Local walks around Welshpool and Llanfair Caereinion - Kirsten Spencer

Welshpool is a busy market town, founded in the mid-thirteenth century. It was described in 1822 as being 'large and populous, and the appearance of opulence is very predominant throughout the place, perhaps owing to its trade in Welsh flannels, which is carried on here to a very great extent. The corner stones whereon its prosperity is founded are the flannel trade and the canal'. Offas Dyke Path, Glyndw^rs Way and The Severn Valley Way all run through this area, and sections of each are visited on these walks.
The routes described in this book follow rights of way or permissive paths. Some are easy-going walks while others are more demanding, though none are mountainous. The majority can be undertaken by those accompanied by children. Many of the walks have summit views and a good proportion include gentler routes along rivers or the Montgomery Canal, sometimes both. Woodland also features in a number of the walks, and there are often refreshment stops.
Some of the routes can be linked to make longer walks. All of them have been given fairly generous times for completion, so energetic walkers will be able to shorten these durations, whereas those who love to linger, or with young families, may need to add extra time.
