The Boulting brothers direct this madcap comedy of errors based on the novel by Kingsley Amis. Jim Dixon (Ian Carmichael) is a history professor who, full of good intentions, is seeking to impress the new chancellor. But somehow he manages to mess up everything he touches, such as unwittingly becoming entangled with a neurotic and inebriated blonde and having to come up with a whole catalogue of unlikely excuses. From conversational gaffes to slapstick car chases, nothing goes right for poor Jim, and the sequence of unfortunate events that unfolds appears to signal the very likely end of his university career.
