The "Materials in action" series has been produced by the Materials Department of the Open University's Technology Faculty as a first/second year undergraduate level text. Its publication in book format brings the Open University's highly regarded texts and teaching methods to a wider audience.;The underlying principle of the series is that an understanding of materials science informs technological decisions about materials, manufacturing processes and product design. The interdependance of properties, processes, products and scientific principles is a distinctive theme of the series. The teaching is based, as far as possible, in a practical and commercial context, and case studies are used extensively.;This book is designed to provide an understanding of how material microstructures and properties are affected during product manufacture. It provides a conceptual framework which aids decisions about materials and manufacturing processes. It assumes a working knowledge of the scientific and technological ideas used to explain the properties of materials. A fundamental theme is the complex interrelationships between the microstructure of a material, its characteristics and suitable processing methods.
