Double bill of children's comedies. In 'Matilda' (1996) Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson) is an exceptionally gifted and intelligent child but her parents Harry (DeVito) and Zinnia (Rhea Perlman) neglect her and treat her with her contempt. A keen reader, her dearest wish is to go to school, but the establishment Harry selects is Crunchem Hall which is run by the brutal Miss Trunchbull (Pam Ferris). Her cruel treatment of her pupils and Matilda's favourite teacher, Miss Honey (Embeth Davidzt), inspires Matilda to use her newly discovered telekinetic powers to seek revenge and change her life. In 'Madeline' (1998) the titular heroine (Hatty Jones) is a mischievous orphan who attends a Parisian boarding school run by Miss Clavel (Frances McDormand). Her happy life is threatened when the owner, Lord Covington (Nigel Hawthorne), decides to sell the school, at which point Madeline embarks on a campaign to change his mind.
