Description

Excerpt from Memoir of John Cheney, Engraver

R. Cheney was anxious for further instruction in his work, although he was already recognized as skilful in his art, and employed by the leading publishers Of Phila delphia, M'essrs. Carey Lea. He was enabled to gratify his desire to visit England by the kindness of a merchant in Providence, Mr. Joseph Howard, who advanced him money to defray his expenses. This generous interest in artists on the part of business men is frequently met with in the history of American art. It is difficult to ascertain the dates of this journey. He appears to have sailed from New York in the Caledonia, June 1, 1830; but he remembered entering Paris during the Revolution of July, 1830. There is no other proof that he went to Paris at this time, but rather that he remained in London for a year or two. A letter is addressed to him at N o. 8 Buckingham Place, Fitzroy Square, London, as late as June 16, 1832.

Mr. Allston gave Mr. Cheney a letter of introduction to the painter Charles Leslie, in which he speaks with great interest of his early promise in art. He appears not to have dcliv ered it; but a note from Leslie Shows that the acquaintance had been made in some way. Leslie superintended the en graving from some of his pictures.
