Before there was Sonic the Hedgehog, there was Alex Kidd. Once upon a time, in fact, he was heralded as SEGA's answer to Mario, a mascot the (then) console-maker was so committed to that it hardwired Alex Kidd in Miracle World into the Master System II. It might seem odd, then, that this retro classic has taken so long to get a remake. Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX brings a faithfully recreated version of this foundational platformer to the current generation of consoles, giving modern gamers a fascinating glimpse into the genre's history. This is, in all the ways that count, the original game punched up for 21st century eyeballs. It's been re-skinned with a more contemporary (but still charmingly old-timey) art style, but all the level layouts and gameplay elements are intact. You can even, should you fancy it, switch to the original version while you play. This is minimal platforming - in his basic state Alex can move, jump and punch, that's it - that's entirely dependent on precision, timing and skill. These base abilities are complemented by power-ups such as a car that helps you careen through stages and a helicopter that enables you to fly. They'll help as you progress to the more complex levels that bloom from the game's simple starting point. New to the game is a boss rush mode, which enables players to tackle the bosses one after the other. For fans of retro gaming - or those who are curious about platforming's history - Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX is a must-buy.
