The formula for Minecraft Dungeons is simple: take the blocky aesthetic of Minecraft (and not a whole lot else from it); marry it to the dungeon-crawling, loot-'em-up style of action RPGs like Diablo and then strip out the type of pesky stats that make them a bit inaccessible to the sort of gamers who usually play Minecraft. The result is a sort of minimalist RPG that will prove a way in for newcomers and a refreshing palate cleanser for more seasoned gamers. Without the stats, your square-headed fighter is defined entirely by their kit and what it can do. You can carry armour, a melee weapon and a bow, as well as three artefacts with time-limited abilities. You do get a limited form of XP in the form of enchantment points, which you can use to build up your items' special powers. It's in the way that you overlap these abilities that you can make your character your own, effectively replacing character classes with the choices you make. You might, for example, combine a slow but powerful hammer with armour that can soak up damage and artefacts that further toughen you up. Voila, a tank! But things get weirder when you get into some of the more esoteric items and weapons, like the llama that hops around distracting enemies. The creative, strategic combination of this stuff is where the real juice of Minecraft: Dungeons is. Add in other players in co-op and the possibilities start increasing exponentially. On lower difficulty levels you can relax and experiment. At higher difficulties... well, things get really tough and you'll likely be thrashing round wildly, just about hanging on by the skin of your square teeth. The higher difficulty levels don't detract from the game's accessibility, however, nor from its wild sense of fun. This is a great entry-level ARPG with plenty for more seasoned players to boot. It's a great one, in particular, for parents and children to play together.
