Black comedy based on a true story. Life in the Ratcliffe household revolves completely around the dreams and aspirations of attractive, eccentric Frank (Iain Glen). He is head of the Bingley Communist Party, which has doubled its membership under his leadership (to 12). He's a teacher and a communist in a country that treats both with suspicion. When Frank decides to emigrate to East Germany, it seems like a tremendous adventure. But soon after they arrive in Frank's promised land of dignity, hope and simple socialist principles, the whole affair starts to turn into a nightmare of paranoia and bureaucratic oppression. It's only when Frank's wife Dorothy (Catherine Tate) strikes up an unlikely friendship with a young boy, Otto (Alexander Scheer), that the revolution really begins.
