Description

Documentary about how Louisville, Kentucky became a focal point for contemporary music in the mid-1900s. The Louisville Orchestra was founded in 1937 by conductor Robert Whitney and Mayor Charles Farnsley. In 1948 the orchestra started a project commissioning works by composers from around the world. When the Rockefeller Foundation awarded the orchestra with a grant of $400,000, the project really took off, resulting in weekly performances and record sales. The film includes archive footage and interviews with musicians and other notable figures from Louisville.
