Born in Tipton, Staffordshire on 21st August 1903, Leonard was the second of the six children of Thomas Chalstrey and his wife Ann Maria. Throughout his long life, Leonard Chalstrey intermittently wrote romantic rhyming poetry. The earliest recorded poem "Eventide" was written when he was almost seventeen and the last one, "Orison" was probably written shortly before his death in 1991.
