As the '1' in the title suggests, NetherRealms has returned to Mortal Kombat's gore-soaked roots for a hard reboot of the storied series. All the key players - eighties action hero Johnny Cage, princess/ninja Kitana, lightning god Raiden, chilly badass Sub Zero and the rest - are back, returned to their youthful beginnings without a whiff of multiversal shenanigans. Mortal Kombat is a series that rewards its fans and pretty much the only big name beat-'em-up franchise that still delivers a blockbuster single-player mode. Put those two things together and you've got what you could more or less call a feature length animated movie that periodically segues into side-on, best-of-three fights, all loaded with nostalgic nods and winks to the series' past. The action remains close to the series' roots, too, with elaborate, bombastic combos the order of the day. Kameo Fighters add an element of chaotic strategy, however, with the option to briefly tag in another combatant to wreak havoc on your opponent. As well as the beefy single-player and multiplayer modes, NetherRealms has also added in an 'Invasions' mode, that throws random encounters and changing elemental damage into the mix. It's back to basics for one of the titans of the brawler world, and fans are in for a brutal time.
