Semi-autobiographical film from the Taviani Brothers which won a Special Jury Prize at Cannes in 1982. On the night of San Lorenzo, the night of falling stars when wishes come true, a woman recalls for her lover the same night in August 1944 when the Tuscan town of San Martino was threatened with destruction by the Nazis as the Americans advanced. Instead of falling stars there were exploding shells lighting up the night sky as many of the peasants fled and joined up with a resistance group, prior to a bloody battle taking place between them and the Facists on the eve of Liberation.
