If city life (or living-on-a-slightly-cramped-island life) is getting you down, a break in the wilderness might be just the ticket to blow out a few cobwebs. And if you can do it without ever leaving your living room, well, why not? To the casual observer hunting sims look a little like slowed-down shoot-'em-ups, but while they certainly have shooting in common, that's about as far as the similarities go. Way of the Hunter is the perfect way for those casual observers to learn about the pleasures of hunting sims, too, since it's pitched as an accessible entry point to the genre thanks to a series of options that will make the game more or less difficult. The game starts with a famous hunter returning to the home range so that he can pick up his ailing grandfather's business. The first few hours of the game are taken up with this narrative, which allows you to learn the ropes before you roam off into free play in Way of the Hunter's huge open world. The core gameplay loop is pretty straightforward - locate your prey, keep slow and low as you stalk it, pick the right weapon for the job, make sure the time is right and then nail the shot. There are some pretty sophisticated mechanics lurking behind that loop, including the likes of 'hunter vision' that highlights things like the sounds of distant animals, tracks, need zones, and blood trails and a bullet cam that you can rewind to study your kills. You can also choose to go on the hunt with a friend in co-op mode, if you like. For all of that, though, the real pleasure in Way of the Hunter is immersing yourself in miles and miles of beautiful wilderness across the world, slowing down and exercising a bit of patience in a way that makes a successful kill feel oh-so sweet. This Wild Expeditions edition bundles in the core game plus a massive six DLCs: Tikamoon Plains in Africa; Aurora Shores in the Alaskan wilderness; the Matariki Park in New Zealand, with its remarkable blend of biomes covering lowland forests right up to the mountains; the Scandinavian Lintukoto Reserve and the Hunters and Outfits packs of goodies to make sure you're properly kitted out.
