Description

Nintendo has to be the unqualified champion of coming up with imaginative ways to take gaming beyond your flat screen. From touch screens to motion control to Labo, the company is always innovating, coming up with new ways for players to interact with their games. The latest, developed in conjunction with Velan Studios, is Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit. It's Mario Kart, but instead of controlling a purely virtual racer over a weird and wacky series of courses, Mario or Luigi is in your living room, motoring around in a remote control kart. Using four cardboard gates (included with the game) and your Switch, players create courses that swerve and weave around your home. You can litter the course with both real world obstacles and classic Mario Kart items, then take to the track to see them gleefully merged on the screen. You'll see it all from the point of view of the kart thanks to an onboard camera, seeing both Mario Kart and your home from a whole new angle. If you run across a power-up or run afoul of an opponent's weapon you might find your real-life kart gets a boost or stalls, and you can even perform an awesome drift in real-life! There are different power levels, too, allowing you to race at levels from 50cc up to 200cc, depending on things like ability level or how much space you have to fling karts around your living room. If you have pals who have their own kart and Switch you can get stuck in with some multiplayer, or go up against a mate with just one thanks to time trials that allow you to race against a ghost. Mario Kart Live is one of those game concepts that's simultaneously ingenious and has you wondering why you didn't think of it yourself.
