This concert from the world-renowned master of Qawwali was filmed before an increasingly ecstatic audience in Birmingham in 1993 four years before Nusrat's death. This programme invites viewers to immerse themselves in the dancing, mystical, hypnotic and infectious sounds that Nusrat's brand of Sufi mysticism brought to audiences the world over. These songs were a part of world music iconography long before they came to prominence after being heard on the soundtrack to Jim Jarmusch's feature film' Dead Man Walking'. Although Nusrat became known in part through dance floor remixes for adventurous collaborations with modern Western musicians which freely mixed funk, rock, disco and jazz with his Qawwali, this concert hews to the stripped-down traditions of the Qawwali ensemble in which Nusrat was raised.
