Octopath Traveler 0 takes us back to the series' roots with a prequel that adapts and updates Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent for console. As you might expect, this one's a beauty! 0 features the series' signature HD-2D graphics, an extremely pretty fusion of retro pixel art and 3DCG, landing it on a sweet spot right in the heart of the Venn diagram between nostalgia and modernity. Adding to that rich visual language is the world map, one of the elements that really makes Octopath Traveller 0 sing. It's painted by Italian painter and cartographer Francesca Baerald, and it adds weight and depth to the game's world that take it to Tolkein-esque heights. The turn-based RPG formula is updated a little by growing the party from four characters to eight (chosen from a cast of 30), and swapping them in and out of combat is good fun. Despite your deeper bench, however, there's a purity to combat, with no big shiny special moves, though the option to recruit a towns-person for a one-off attack is a fun meta touch. The game also gives you the chance to rebuild your own town, which provides a nice complement to the more story-focused elements. The turn-based RPG genre has, once again, become a crowded field, but Octopath Traveler 0 does plenty to hold its own.
