Release in April of 2004, Mindscape's Painkiller was a real surprise for the FPS genre, delivering a visual style and play mechanic easily comparable with the likes of Doom 3. It is by all means an excellent gaming example, but it's about to get a whole lot better with the addition the Battle Out of Hell expansion pack. Picking up where the previous instalment left off, Battle Out of Hell simply adds a further 10 single-player levels to a sinister scenario that sees players facing off against a constant stream of demonic beings throughout. And maintaining the high standard of Painkiller, each of these new locales and its inhabitants are remarkably detailed and unique, creating a sense of variety that shows just how much effort has been put into this expansion pack. There is around an extra 10 hours play in the single-player game here, as well as four new weapons and a map editor that allows its users to completely redesign the single-player adventure if they so wish. And while that's the bulk of what's on offer, those fond of multi-player gaming won't be left out either, as Battle Out of Hell offers two new multi-players modes and a set of brand new maps. Like before, up to 32 gamers can complete online, and the addition of a hellish mutation of Capture the Flag brings a little extra to the Painkiller community. Utilising the Havok 2.0 game engine, Painkiller and its expansion are among the best looking of PC games. But it's a great shoot-em-up too, and one that sees a welcome return to the old-school playing style of the Doom series.
