Description

Playing Phoenix Point, you can't help but notice the specter of XCOM in the background. It's a common occurrence in modern strategy games, thanks to that revered franchise looming as large as it does. Phoenix Point, however, gets a pass - it's directed by Julian Gollop, designer in chief of the original X-COM from way back in 1994. In Phoenix Point the world is becoming overrun by an ancient alien threat that has crawled out of the oceans and only the Phoenix Project, a secretive organisation made up of the greatest minds and soldiers humanity has left, can stand in their way. Now, it's on you to lead the organisation. Explore a devastated Planet Earth, research and develop new technologies, manage planetary resources, build bases and fight the aliens (and other humans, for that matter) on the ground in tense turn-based battles. Where the likes of XCOM have tended to streamline their mechanics, however, Phoenix Point revels in complexity. Where XCOM offers a series of discrete choices, Phoenix Point gives you a pool of action points to draw on and steadily takes them away from you as you shoot, run, noodle about in your inventory... do pretty much anything, basically. Meanwhile, you might find that something like your speed is affected by other stats, or by carrying too much gear, or by taking the wrong sort of hit. Everything affects everything else, in other words, and each decision must be made accordingly. This Behemoth Edition is being billed as the ultimate version of the game for console, with a UI that's been adapted for the living room and a raft of DLC that's been released since it first launched on PC.
