Description

Two documentaries about the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 that destroyed the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. In 'The Other Pompeii: Life and Death in Herculaneum' Professor Andrew Wallace-Hadrill of the University of Cambridge looks at where the 340 people who died in the tragedy once lived and analyses, with the help of scientists Luca Bondioli and Luciano Fattore, their houses, their furniture and their everyday lives. In 'Pompeii: Life and Death in a Roman Town' Mary Beard presents evidence about the lives of the people of Pompeii before the catastrophic eruption. Investigating a cellar in Oplontis where 54 skeletons were found and using forensic techniques, the programme explores various aspects of life for people in the area, including diet, social class, disease and sex.
