Detective Sergeant Kate Power is settling into her new life, and growing closer to her colleagues in the CID.

A spate of warehoue fires culminating in the death of a homeless person is taking up Kate's professional time, while off-duty she becomes fascinated by the pile of antique buttons that have been unearthed in her garden. Then she's present when the body of a middle-aged woman is discovered, naked, at the tennis club. Her death appears initially to be from natural causes, but Kate suspects otherwise. And though it's not her case, and the DI in charge does not welcome her contribution, Kate soon finds that she can't remain uninvolved.
