Six episodes starring Ken Stott as the eponymous hero John Rebus in this adaptation of Ian Rankin's worldwide best-selling detective series. Set in Edinburgh, Rebus's investigations lead him through the city's ancient beauty and into its more sinister quarters.
In 'Fleshmarket Close', a Kosovan man is murdered in a notorious Edinburgh sink estate. Initially the murder appears to be race-related but Rebus is not convinced. His investigations lead him through the world of asylum seekers and gangland bosses who cruelly govern the poor inhabitants of the estate. In 'The Falls', the death of an obstetrician and the discovery of a small coffin with an effigy of a baby lying beside the corpse leads Rebus into the wealthy and powerful circles of Edinburgh society where his enquiries are coolly dismissed. In 'The Black Book', the body of a missing prostitute is found, and the circumstances recall an unsolved murder from twenty years before. Rebus is convinced that the prime suspect from the earlier case has struck again. In 'Let it Bleed', when a small-time criminal blows his head off at the offices of investment banker, Andrew Hammill, Rebus is convinced that there is more to the case than a straightforward suicide. In 'A Question of Blood', Rebus investigates a shooting at Stoneymount College that has left two pupils and an instructor dead, and another boy seriously injured. The evidence implicates one of the deceased - but Rebus has other ideas. Finally, in 'Strip Jack', millionaire philanthropist, Gregor Jack, is caught during a brothel raid. In another part of town, a woman is found beaten to death, a victim of failed sexual assault. Jack claims he made an error of judgement in visiting the brothel, but Rebus suspects a set-up.
