Reef - MR David Kendrick

Reef is an eco-adventure set in New Zealand 2006. It follows the lives of four very different people and what happens when an artificial surf reef is installed in Tauranga's sacred Maori fishing waters. Gnat, a young disfigured Maori, takes revenge on the white Pakeha that have taken his ancestors' lands and culture. But in doing so he is forced to question his own values as he creates the very prejudices he's fought so hard to oppose. Chloe is boss of an Environmental Consultancy firm in Dorset. When the local Council investigates options for a new surf reef she secures the first job for her newly qualified partner Shaun, a local surfer and Marine Biologist. She is pregnant with his child and anxious to decide whether his naive and prejudiced personality is suitable husband material. Although confident in overseeing the reef study in New Zealand, she has doubts of her own ability to project manage a child. Shaun must overcome his greatest fears, and question his own judgement of people when he faces Mickey, who owns the local surf shop in Tauranga. Mickey's business will suffer if the reef is a success and he will stop at nothing to protect his empire.
