What does it mean? The question of process, of mechanical explanation, and the question of meaning, of ideal interpreta tion. And men cannot help asking the second question as well as the first. As Watts says, endeavoring to put into words the constant thought back of all his own work as an artist: As long as humanity is humanity, man will yearn to ascend the heights that human footsteps may not tread, and will long to lift the veil that shrouds the enigma of being; and he will most prize the echo of this longing in even the incoherent expression of literature.
