Documentary by Karzan Sherabayani on the struggle of this Kurdish area of Iraq under Saddam and today, under coalition control. Karzan was himself arrested and tortured 25 years ago for the crime of having been born Kurdish in Iraq. He fled to 25 years in exile and here returns to vote in the first democratic election in his homeland. He talks to the people of Kirkuk how they feel about the path to democracy as proscribed by the occupying western forces. In a city that sits on one of the planets largest and richest oil deposits, Karzan finds abject poverty, political unrest and even utter despair. Sadly, he ultimately finds old racial prejudices and political divides as entrenched as ever but his one year journey, facing many old demons, is a fascinating and insightful one.
