Is Hell is Us bleak as... well, hell? Yes, yes it is. Is it an action RPG? Yes! Is it, like every other dark action RPG on the market, a soulslike, then? Nope! Well, only a little bit, anyway. While there's certainly a fair bit of stamina-driven combat, with a bevy of weapons to try and a big dollop of strategy, that's only half the picture. The other half is a focus on detective-style investigations. Set in the fictional European country of Hadea in the 1990s, the game has you play as United Nations peacekeeper Remy. Hadea is in the throes of a civil war following a supernatural event known as 'the calamity', and you've been detained following a mission into the country to find your parents. The game follows your story of how you, along with the remaining factions, survived in there, and how you fought off the strange Hollow Walkers. The vibe is reminiscent of Death Stranding, with Hadea transformed into an alien landscape and weird things popping off all around you. The game very much throws you into Hadea and leaves you to fend for yourself. There's no mini map and no waypoints, just you and the intel in your datapad, so you'd best pay close attention to what the residents of Hadea, and the environment, are telling you if you want to solve the mystery of what happened to your parents.
