Double bill feauring two classic Japanese movies. Set in Heian era (11th century) Japan, 'Sansho Dayu' (1954) follows an aristocratic woman, Tamaki (Kinuyo Tanaka), and her two children, Zushio (Yoshiaki Hanayagi) and Anju (Kyoko Kagawa), who are parted from Tamaki's husband when he finds himself in trouble with the feudal powers for treating peasants with kindness. When the children are kidnapped and sold as slaves to the eponymous Sansho (Eitaro Shindo), each family member's life is set on its own tragic course. Adapted by director Kenji Mizoguchi from a short story by Ogai Mori, this film won the Silver Lion at Venice in 1954. 'Gion Bayashi' (1953) is a drama set in the world of the courtesan. Eiko (Ayako Wakao) is a 16-year old orphan and Miyoharu (Michiyo Kogure) the geisha who agrees to be her mentor.
