This reissue comes just as scholars and commentators, both Chinese and Western, are taking a new interest in China's recent political history, and the role of the Cultural Revolution. Neale Hunter was one of the few Westerners resident in Shanghai during the Cultural Revolution, and his book, first published in 1969, was the first full-length account of it to be written by a foreign observer.
