Ranko Tsukigime is not your average teenager. It almost goes without saying, as so few games are made about average teenagers. Ranko couldn't be less average, though. By day she poses as a regular school kid. By night she ruthlessly dispatches targets as a highly-skilled assassin.
In Short Peace we get to see what really is Ranko's longest day - the day her target is her own father. To make matters worse still, Ranko's friends are under threat. She's in a fight not just for her own life, but for those of everyone around her.
Short Peace is a sidescrolling action game with a blistering pace. A mysterious demonic force relentlessly stalks Ranko from the left of the screen, meaning she must keep moving at all cost and keeping the tension and pace high.
With legendary developer Suda 51 producing, you know there's going to be some creative design going on, and Ranko runs and leaps across an environment of muted colours punctuated by bright, vividly-coloured enemies. The emphasis is on rhythm and movement, with Ranko able to wall jump, glide and fire off a limited number of bullets as she hacks and slashes ever-forward.
Even putting aside the involvement of Suda-San, the game carries a pedigree. It's the final part in Katsuhiro Otomo's Short Peace anthology. Anime and manga fans might know him as the creator of Akira, and Short Peace is a collection of anime shorts from various directors, culminating in this game. That makes it a must for anime fans!
