The craft of signwriting has seen a resurgence over the past 10 years with many fine examples on shop fascia boards and windows, inns and restaurant signs and awnings and banners. At the same time many colleges started teaching signwork again, in its demand for a new generation of crafts people.

When the book appeared in 1984 it was the first to be published on the subject for over 20 years and was widely welcomed.

It deals not only with signwriting but also with gilding, glass decorating, and smallrun screen printing. It offers advice on drawing letters and on heraldry, as well as on the production of signs, including materials, their fixing and cost. The glass decoration section us unique and details the traditional methods of producing, French embossed and acid toned glass.

The second edition includes new information on materials and colour, a photographic survey of range of examples of twentieth century signwork, and a set of questions for self study purposes.
