Aleksandr Sokurov directs this meditative visual poem, which straddles the divide between film and art. A man sets out on a solitary journey across vast snow-covered expanses, seas, border crossings and congested city streets before finally arriving in the centre of Rotterdam. In a seemingly abandoned palace he finally discovers the goal of his voyage: a ghostly museum where he philosophically ponders a collection of paintings, including 'St Mary's Square', an evocative landscape by Peter Saenredam.
