A sporting overview of the year, 1968. It was another red-letter year for British drivers (Graham Hill won the world title narrowly from Jackie Stewart ). But it was also the year when racing driver, Jim Clark, tragically died in a crash. Howard Winstone, the 'dancing Welshman', won the featherweight boxing championship of the world. Most people's attention, however, focused on the dazzling and explosive personality of Muhammad Ali, who would be stripped of his world heavyweight title. In tennis, Arthur Ashe became the first black player to win a major men's singles title, while Rod Laver and Billie Jean King won at Wimbledon. In horse racing, Lester Piggott took both the Derby and the Grand National. 1968 was also the year that England's cricketers beat the West Indies at home; Manchester City took the League Championship; and Manchester United became the first English side to win the European Cup Final.
