Description

The next installment of the much loved (and brilliantly named) The World Ends With You series is finally out and people are saying very nice things about it. The game sees you competing in the 'Reapers' Game', a savage reality TV show that sees contestants duking it out in teams with psychic powers in an other-dimensional version of Shibuya in Tokyo. It's stylish, poppy, bright and mad. Combat is front and centre, but it plays out in amid all the drama of a reality TV show, giving it a fun and emotional fizz that runs on shopping trips, phone messages, fashion, pop culture references and friendship. That aforementioned combat does take a little getting used to, mind. You take control of a team, with each member having their own ability powered by a collectible badge. Each badge has an input mapped to a button of its own, with abilities including things like slashy glittering blades, magic arrows, lightning, and ice that erupts from the floor. Meanwhile, each has its own cool down period that you'll need to balance by switching between team members, and a groove meter allows you to build up to a special. There's a lot to get to grips with, but when you nail everything it feels great. It's all backed up by madcap visuals that look like a combination of sketchy manga and bold neon poster art. It's maximalist stuff that really takes your eyeballs out for a spin. NEO: The World Ends With You is a real oddball of an RPG, and fans wouldn't have it any other way.
