Starfield is, Bethesda says, the first new universe it has created in 25 years. It's worth adding that it's the closest the studio behind Fallout and Skyrim has come to building an actual universe! Set in 2330AD, Starfield launches you to the stars. Humanity is no longer confined to our solar system and has embraced a grand destiny out in the galaxy. You're a member of Constellation, a group that sees itself as the last great human explorers, seeking out mysterious artefacts scattered across the vastness of space. While there's a main story quest for you to follow, Starfield is very much your story to craft. From the moment you build your character, you'll be able to pick your own way across the cosmos, following Constellation's path or losing yourself in exploration, experimentation and side quests as you see fit. Customise the look and functionality of your ship with weapons and shields, and assign crew members to different tasks for unique bonuses so that when you find yourself in a deep space dogfight you're ready to go. Beyond that, the deep crafting system gives you all sorts of choices, thanks in no small part to the range of flora, fauna and other resources you'll encounter on terra firma, all of which feed into food, medicine and equipment. You can even build outposts and hire a crew to extract materials and establish supply routes while you're off getting into scrapes across the galaxy. Meanwhile, the game practically fizzes with physics and systems that interact with each other to create all sorts of possibilities. Then there's the human (and alien) side of things. You'll find two main regional factions (each with their own police force for you to join, if you fancy it), crime syndicates, corporations, a cult. There are bars full of NPCs practically gagging to give you a quest. There's a shocking number of abandoned research facilities for you to crawl. There are jails, fines, bounties and any number of other ways for you to get in and out of trouble. Basically, Starfield is an enormous, rich melting pot of possibility for you to explore.
