Double bill of Igor Stravinsky's early twentieth century ballets. In 'The Firebird' Kaschei is a terrible ogre who captures women and turns rescuing males into stone with just a look. Young Prince Ivan espies a beautiful firebird and follows it into Kaschei's garden. The bird flies away but he meets some 13 young maidens and promptly falls in love with one fo them, named Tsarevna. On returning to meet his lover he is captured by the ogre and his evil servants but waving a feather of the firebird calls her to rescue him before he is turned to stone. She tells him of a secret that might kill the seemingly immortal ogre and release the prisoners. Ivan sets to work forthwith, to end the evil creature's hold upon the land. In 'Les Noces' (the Wedding) Stravinsky brings to life traditional Russian peasant life in a complex musical piece involving separated percussion groups coupled with distinct vocal groups.
