Cuphead is a remarkable game. It's not the first that basically looks like a playable cartoon, but it's the first that draws so warmly and authentically from the 1930s. The flickering screen, the restlessness of the characters, the bobbing rhythm of everything that moves, the eyes on anything and everything... it all looks like it's being projected into your home through celluloid. Except it's a run and gun 2D shooter. And it's brutal. You play as the titular Cuphead (either solo or in co-op), a teacup in shorts who can shoot pellets by clicking his fingers, and you're up against the devil and an extensive roster of his minions. Behind the 30's aesthetic is a very 80s/90s gameplay style. You run, you shoot, you die, you fight a boss, you die, you beat the boss, you upgrade, you die you die you die, you don't die and it feels great. It's a classic, tightly-executed formula dressed in a gorgeous art style and brought to life with a lauded period soundtrack. This boxed release gets you the original game, 'Don't Deal With the Devil', and the expansion, 'The Delicious Last Course', as well as the 'Cuphead Funnies' comic collector cards and the vintage-inspired 'Cuphead Club Membership'.
