Packed with photographs and also including route maps the book tells the story of Sunderland's railways from the early coal and limestone wagonways then George Stephenson's pioneering Hetton Colliery Railway and the subsequent development of a complex rail network. The book is brought up to date looking at today's Metro system. The illustrations show how railways became the lifeblood of Sunderland serving its shipyards, collieries, glassworks and other industries.
