Eight years after the debut of Little Nightmares, there's still nothing quite like it. There's a bit of The Nightmare Before Christmas (and maybe Beetlejuice) in the DNA, sure. And maybe a smidge of Playdead's Limbo and Inside in the sombre tone. But neither comparison quite does justice to Little Nightmares' one-off mix of grim, claustrophobic horror and bleak awe. Now, the sputtering torch has been passed from Tarsier to Until Dawn studio Supermassive, but the series' black, magical heart is still very much intact. The game brings two new child protagonists into the fold, Low and Alone. Together, they must journey through the Spiral, platforming and solving puzzles as they look for a path that could lead them out of the Nowhere. Low is slight and birdlike, nervously wielding a bow, while Alone, with her wrench, is more solid. They don't have much to say, but there's a keenly observed tenderness to their relationship.
