The year is 1940, and the War is beginning to affect everyday life. Foreign travel is no longer feasible, so holidays at home enjoy a new lease of life. The Castle family have owned Pipers cafe on the beach at St David's Well for three generations and business - in the shape of ice-creams and teas on the sand-is booming. But not everyone in the family is happy. Beth Castle has become engaged to Freddy Clements, who is waiting to be called up, but Freddy longs for excitement before it is too late and his indiscretions are soon causing Beth sleepless nights. The only person she can turn to is her friend Peter Gregory, but his love for Beth means that he cannot give her unbiased advice. Meanwhile Beth's sister Lilly is secretly having an affair with Phil Martin, who is married with two children. When she becomes pregnant, he can do nothing - his wife and children are his first priority. But when tragedy strikes she discovers that he has been hiding a terrible secret.
