Little Nightmares was something of a surprise cult classic when it came around in 2017. Taking a lead from the likes of Limbo, it was a sidescrolling platformer that dripped with malevolent atmosphere. In place of the usual 2D art, however, Little Nightmares and this follow-up have a rich three dimensional art style that's reminiscent of claymation and makes some of the creepier monsters look as though they could crawl right out of your TV screen. (Tarsier, the developer behind the games, describes the world as 'charming', which is true if you find things guaranteed to haunt your dreams to be endearing). This time out you play as Mono, a young boy with a bag on his head, but are joined by Six, the protagonist of the first game as you make your way through this twisted, out-sized world. You're outside the Maw this time and have a limited combat ability, but everything still looms, everything sneaks its tendrils under the skin of your psyche, nothing offers comfort. More often than not, your best option is to run. Occasionally there's a puzzle to solve. Whatever you do, expect to do it with sweaty palms and a palpitating heart... This Enhanced Edition has been improved for current generation consoles to make use of their extra horsepower, with a Beauty Mode that runs at 30fps at 4K resolution with optimised ray tracing, or a Performance Mode that locks the game at 60fps but dynamically scales the resolution up to 4K. It also boasts improved, immersive audio and a host of other graphical improvements.
