Three films by Russian director Aleksandr Sokurov. 'Save and Protect' (1990) is inspired by the French classic novel 'Madame Bovary' by Gustave Flaubert. Tsetsiliya Zervudaki plays the frustrated housewife who finds her only outlet for her romantic dreams and longings in extramarital affairs, with disastrous results. Focusing on the interior lives of the characters, Sokurov creates an impressionistic, subtle and slightly surreal version of the story. In 'The Second Circle' (1990), a young man (Pyotr Aleksandrov) returns to his childhood home in a bleak industrial small town in Siberia following the death of his father. As the necessary burial procedures unfold, the son struggles to find any meaning in life, death and the clumsy relationship he had with his father. 'Elegy of Life' (2006) is Sokurov's documentary about the life and work of musician Mstislav Rostropovich and his wife Galina Vishnevskaya.
