In episode one, Septimus Harding (Donald Pleasence) becomes the target of an investigation into misappropriated church funds. In episode two, John Bold (David Gwillim) is forced to withdraw his accusations against Harding when he becomes engaged to his daughter Eleanor (Janet Maw). Episode three sees Barchester's complacency shattered by a series of power struggles, while in episode four, honour forces Harding to refuse Rev. Slope's (Alan Rickman) offer to reinstate him as warden.
