The potato famine of 1846 provides the backdrop for this BBC drama, filmed on location in Donegal, and starring the McGann brothers. They play members of the Phelan family, each trying to make ends meet in the face of poverty and corruption on the part of the English landlords. Sean has a wife and children to feed, Con pays the rent by stick-fighting, Daniel turns from teaching at the local school to fighting for the violent rebel movement, and Liam, the parish priest, struggles to keep his faith in the face of despair. The McGann brothers based the story on their own family history.
