William Dieterle directs this 1930s adaptation of Victor Hugo's classic novel. Quasimodo (Charles Laughton) is the deformed bell-ringer of Paris's Notre Dame Cathedral, taunted and brutalised by the townspeople because of his repellent appearance. Despite his outward appearance, Quasimodo has a tender heart, as he demonstrates when he falls in love with beautiful gypsy girl Esmeralda (Maureen O'Hara). However, their friendship seems doomed to end in tragedy when Esmeralda is accused of murdering her lover.
