This innovative docu-drama is based on a play by Moiss Kaufman and the New York City theatre company Tectonic Theatre. It tells the story of the events leading up to - and the aftermath of - a horrific event that took place in a small town in Wymoing in autumn 1998: a young gay man, Matthew Shepard, was kidnapped, brutally beaten and left to die, tied to a fence. Using a combination of re-enactments of courtroom trials and interviews performed by professional actors alongside real news footage, the film examines the attitudes of the community - described by the media at the time as 'the hate capital of America' - both before and after the murder.
