TV adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic, starring Roger Rees as the young Nicholas, who, along with his mother (Jane Downs) and sister Kate (Emily Richard), is forced to seek financial assistance from his unpleasant uncle, Ralph Nickleby (John Woodvine). Ralph finds Nicholas a job in a harsh and unforgiving school for abandoned boys in Yorkshire, run by a violent and tyrannical headmaster (Alun Armstrong). Nicholas finds the cruelty there unbearable and runs away with one of his pupils, the crippled outcast Smike (David Threlfall). Meanwhile, Kate has become the subject of the affections of Sir Mulberry Hawk, an intimacy encouraged by Uncle Ralph, and, amid many Dickensian plot twists and asides, Nicholas and Smike set out to rescue her.
