A collection of ten Mike Leigh feature films. In his debut, 'Bleak Moments' (1971), a sherry-sipping typist, a tongue-tied schoolteacher and a would-be pop star are among the sad cases trapped in suburban South London. 'Meantime' (1983) is set in East London during the early 1980s and the peak of unemployment in Thatcher's Britain. 'High Hopes' (1988) is Leigh's class struggle comedy of manners whilst his acclaimed social comedy, 'Life is Sweet' (1990), is set in a lower-middle class household in a London suburb and 'Naked' (1993) is a violent and disturbing look at the milieu inhabited by London's homeless. In the bittersweet comedy 'Secrets and Lies' (1996), a young black Londoner is surprised to discover, after the death of her adoptive parents, that her birth mother is in fact a white single-mum. 'Career Girls' (1997) explores the changing face of friendship as times goes by. 'Topsy Turvy' (1999) is a comic look at one of light opera's most famous creative partnerships - the writing team of William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. 'All or Nothing' (2002) is a return to gritty drama starring Timothy Spall. Finally, 'Vera Drake' (2004) stars Imelda Staunton as a woman devoted completely to her working class family, who secretly visits women with unwanted pregnancies, helping them induce miscarriage.
