Arthur Penn directs this American biopic about Helen Keller (Patty Duke) and the influential relationship she had with her blind tutor Anne Sullivan (Anne Bancroft). Following a severe bout of scarlet fever as a child, Helen is deaf and blind and struggles to make any meaningful communication with her parents, Arthur (Victor Jory) and Kate (Inga Swenson). Frustrated by her inability to communicate, Helen is prone to violent outbursts. In an attempt to improve matters her parents hire a tutor, Anne Sullivan, to assist Helen with improving her communication and becoming less volatile.
