When the Japanese invaded the Philippines, Malaya and Hong Kong in December 1941, they only needed to take Ceylon to have the perfect springboard for the invasion of India. A warning radioed by a Canadian airman, who was subsquently captured and made a prisoner of war, allowed the Allied forces to hold Ceylon, although heavy losses were suffered. Churchill later described this as the most dangerous moment of the war. Fifty years later, 180 veterans return to Ceylon to pay their respects.
