The last episodes of the first series of the BBC drama series, chronicling the adventures of a 19th century ship's captain, James Onedin. The Onedin Line faces bankruptcy and James' former employer Callon is demanding payment for repairs. James attempts to borrow from friends, but has one last trick up his sleeve. Meanwhile, the arrival of Daniel Fogarty threatens the happiness of Albert and Elizabeth. Albert then discovers that Daniel Fogarty is the true father of his 'son' William, he considers leaving Elizabeth for a post in America. James considers running aid to the Yankee South in the American Civil War, despite Anne's refusal to help a nation still practising slavery. James also has to decide whether to invest in the new steam age, and defeat his old enemy Callon.
