Franco-Jewish writer Adrienne Mark (Jeanne Moreau) decides to leave New York and return to her childhood home in Paris. Here she is appalled by French racism towards Africans and Arabs, and remembers how her Jewish mother was snatched by the SS during the war. Suffering feelings of guilt, she becomes embroiled in the attempts of an American film-maker to purchase the rights to 'Lola', a film by Adrienne's old friend Franz Legendre.
